BRAHMA GANA SABHA
Effective portrayal
AFTER A Ragamalika, Talamalika Thodayamangalam, Jayanthi Subramaniam took up the marathon Ragamalika varnam of the Thanjavur Quartet `Sami Ninne.'
The Theermanams in this item spoke of her long years of experience.
The lyrics are about the heroine declaring her love for Lord Brihadeeswara and requesting Him to accept her.
But the Sringara and pleading did not come through in Jayanthi's abhinaya.
There was only a sense of awe on her face.
She fared better in the sloka from Krishnakarnamritham in which Yasodha narrates the story of Rama to the child Krishna to make him sleep and at the instance of Ravana abducting Seetha the child cries out `Lakshmana! Where is my bow and arrow?' and the mother reminds her baby that he is Krishna in this birth.
The portrayal of the affectionate mother by Jayanthi was effective.
The Nattuvangam was done by her Guru Adyar Lakshmanan, vocal support by Radha Badri, mridangam by Kannan and violin by Kalaiarasan.
