Delightful Kuchipudi
Sailaja
SAILAJA PROVIDED a delightful experience of Kuchipudi dance at Kartik Fine Arts. She has established her identity in the dance form with an involved perfection in laya, and tala.
She follows the pure line of dance of her Guru Vempatti Chinna Satyam and sticks to tradition in presentation.
Starting with Adi Sankara's sloka followed by "Dakshinamurthiye Namaha" in Ranjani ragam, she presented the regular Kuchipudi margam with all its vibrancy.
When dancers take training in Bharathanatyam and Kuchipudi, they tend to make Kuchipudi more streamlined and straight as Bharathanatyam. The buoyancy of Kuchipudi is lost. But Sailaja tried to keep the racy rhythm of Kuchipudi. The Krishna Sabdam with its appeal of the gopika and the Krishna Leela in Mohana raga is a standard fare in the Kuchipudi style.
Sailaja performed it with effortless smoothness. The "Amma Ananda Dayini" piece looked almost like Bharathanatyam but the tarangam in Gambhira Nattai composed by Balamuralikrishna brought out the ebullient and intensely lyrical quality of Kuchipudi as also its bold and sensuous movements. It personified the dancer's professionalism. The dance on the plate was enchanting. There is a sincerity in Sailaja's movements that is very touching.
The Surutti Javali, "Maryada Teliyakara" was done with restraint and gambiram. But Sailaja did look tired in the Behag tillana of Balamuralikrishna. It was an enjoyable and sincere exposition of Kuchipudi.
