Command over laya
S. UMAMAHESWARAN who was featured in the first afternoon slot of Nungambakkam Cultural Academy has good manodharma, raga gnana and control over laya. His mannerism in articulation is perhaps his habit, nevertheless the recital was quite satisfying. Tyagaraja's "Sambho Mahadeva" was sung impressively with neraval and kalpanaswaras. Shanmukhapriya alapana featured some good pidis with some super fast brighas. Dikshitar's "Ekamresa" was sung well with neraval and swaraprasthara for "Kanchinagara Nivasini."
I.Venkateswara Rao's violin accompaniment was supportive. Manikudi Chandrasekhar gave good rhythmic support and he played an interesting tani avarthanam in Adi tala - 2 kallai.
Elegant
Choosing a sober style, Vasumathi Badrinath gave a recital featuring popular keerthanas. Tyagaraja's "Aparadha mula Norva" (Rasaali) was sung well followed by "Vaidyanaatham Bhajami" in Ataana, with neraval and kalpanaswaras. Vachaspati alpana was elaborate and Tyagaraja's "Kanta joodoomi" was sung elegantly with competent neraval and kalpanaswaras for "Alanaadu Sowmithri Paada Seva."
Roopa Rajagopal gave good support on violin playing Vachaspati attractively. The percussion duo J. Ramdas and Arjun Ganesh gave rhythmic support playing an interesting tani avarthanam in Aadi tala - 1 kallai for 1 ½ idam culminating in an exciting korvai.
