Brisk jati and good footwork

VARSHA SURESH, disciple of K.J. Sarasa, presented Bharatanatyam recital at this year's dance festival of Brahma Gana Sabha. She began with brisk jatis and went on to do Abhinaya for two verses on Lord Siva `Kunitha Puruvamum' and `Thodudaiya Seviyon.' It was then the turn of the feat of energy by Varsha, the lengthy Ragamalika varnam set to Roopaka Talam by the Thanjavur Quartet.
The commendable handling of the several theermanams, certainly more than what one gets to see usually, proved her commitment. Her footwork and Angasuddha were reasonably good.
There were several Sancharis in the varnam, depicting the events from the legend of Siva. But the Sthayibhava of the piece was the love and longing of the heroine for Lord Brihadeeswara of Thanjavur, which did not come through quite effectively. While her facial expressions were not bad, the feeling of longing and pleading to the Lord to accept her were not discernible.
In her abhinaya of the female character shades of male attitudes peeped in quite often. The programme had Nattuvangam by K.J. Seetha and Ramya, very understanding vocal support by Girija, mridangam by Sakthivel and violin by Nagarajan.
