In praise of the guru

Shovana Narayan who performed at the Durga Lal Samaroh in Bhopal.

SAMVED SANSTHA of Mumbai has maintained the tradition of organising the Pandit Durga Lal Samaroh for more than 15 years. All credit to Uma Dogra for religiously remembering the great guru with reverence.

The samaroh was organised at Antrang auditorium of Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal under the joint aegis of Ustad Allauddin Khan Sangeet Kala Acadamy, Madhya Pradesh Sanskriti Parishad and Samved Sanstha, Mumbai.

The stage was first taken by Bhopal-based Kathak dancer Vijaya Sharma, a senior disciple of Pandit Ramlal. Some of her tukras and amads were really impressive. She has a style of her own within the Raigarh tradition.

The second item was the captivating performance of Uma Dogra, who excelled not only in bhav-ang but also in dextrous and intricate pag-chaalan and variations of tatkar, following the lineage of her guru the late Pandit Durga Lal.

She possesses a graceful stage presence, her composition, a blend of "Kanupriya" and a traditional Bhajan mesmerising the audience, who longed to see more of her footwork and shudh nritya.

Shovana Narayan came with a crisp concluding but impressive recital in which she performed the famous jhoola-paran of Guru Kundanlal Gangani and delighted the audience in her typical style of blending the footwork and tarana in the mood, elevating the tempo. However, it was her Kathanak based on the mythological story of Sujata that established her claim and main strength in the bhav-ang, revealing her creativity as a danseuse.
