NRI TV awards

THE FIRST NRI TV Film awards (www.NRITVFilmClub.com) function was aired all over the U.S. on Jan. 23 on TV Asia. Organised by the NRI TV Film Club and presented by H. R. Shah of TV Asia and Video Sound, the awards were given away at a function at the grand ballroom of Manhattan enter studios. Talking about the ceremony over telephone, Trilok Malik, founder, NRI TV Club, said that the function was a grand success. The ceremony was attended by over 600 invited guests among whom were well-known NRI dignitaries, filmmakers and business personalities, including film and television actor Madhur Jaffrey, New York Consul General Pramathesh Rath, former New York Solicitor General Preeta Bansal, Columbia University Professor of Journalism Sreenath Srinivasan, Kamal Dandona of Bollywood Awards, Kanu Chauhan of Rajsun Entertainment, Bharat Jotwani of Poojanka Entertainment, singer and producer Poonam Khubani and NRI filmmakers and their cast and crew.

There were 15 non-competitive films made in the U.S. The producers were honoured on the occasion. The winners included "Lonely in America," "Arya," "Little Magician," "ABCD," "American Desi," "Wings of Hope," "Journey," "Legally Desi," "Carry on Papa," "Leela," "Flavors," "Kehta Hai Dil Baar Baar," "Piyu Gayo Pardesh," "Trade-Offs" and "American Addition."

Films were selected for their themes of immigrant experience and the search for finding a balance between one's roots and adopted culture, of being part of the new world while retaining part of one's own culture.

Tirlok Malik appealed to the audience to nurture the NRI entertainment talent. The NRIs who attended the function were Samrat Chakrabarti, Amber Khan, Pooja Kumar, Manu Narayan of Bombay Dreams and by Sreenath Srinivasan. The awards form the first step towards realisation of a dream conceptualised by Tirlok Malik who has long felt the need to unite NRI talent and provide a common platform to them to express themselves. ``Together we can make a difference" is the slogan of the club.
