Stars glitter at awards function

The Madhavapeddi Awards, instituted in the memory of Madhavapeddi Satyam, were given away at a function held at Vani Mahal, Chennai, recently. A report.

THE MADHAVAPEDDI Awards, instituted in the memory of Madhavapeddi Satyam by his son and Kuchipudi exponent Madhavapeddi Murthy, were given away at a function held at the Mahaswami Auditorium at Vani Mahal, Chennai on January 28. The event turned out to be a nostalgic trip for many of the stalwarts present on the dais

Madhavapeddi Satyam was a renowned singer and stage actor with a booming voice. He made an entry into films as a singer-actor playing the role of Kabir in Y. V. Rao's Tamil-Hindi bilingual, ``Ramadas" way back in 1946. Madhavapeddi Satyam has rendered voice to actors like S. V. Ranga Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, N. T. Ramarao, Sivaji Ganesan (in a Tamil film), Jaggiah, Relangi, Ramana Reddy and Padmanabham. He has rendered about 6,000 songs in his five-decade-long film career but one song that defies time and is still popular is "Vivaha Bhojanambu" from the film, "Maya Bazaar" that he had sung for S. V. Ranga Rao.

Down memory lane

Receiving the Madhavapeddi Satyam Award, veteran music director M. S. Viswanathan said he had had the privilege of playing harmony at the recording of a song rendered by Satyam while he was working as an assistant with C. R. Subburaman. "He had blessed me then. Today, I am receiving an award named after him. I feel that whatever I have achieved is indeed a result of teamwork. Even today, I consider every new film I sign as my first film."

Vanishree, receiving the Madhavapeddi Prabhavathi Award, shared similar sentiments.

Chief guest S. Janaki recollected that she sang at the wedding of Madhavapeddi Satyam in Rajahmundry while she was a beginner. "He told me then that I had a great future in films." She lauded Murthy for instituting the awards in memory of his parents.

S. P. Balasubramaniam, the other chief guest of the evening, said that there was one voice that perfectly synchronised with S. V. Rangarao's — Satyam's. "He rendered a song in `Rara Krishnaiah,' the debut film of `Sankarabharanam' fame J. V. Somayajulu, for which I have composed music." He said he owed his Tamil debut to M. S. Viswanathan.
