Rising star

ONE OF the brightest young talents that the recently concluded `Nritya Pratibha' in Bhubaneswar presented was Kathak dancer, Souvik Chakraborty of Kolkata. "I have come to Orissa many a time and I have always found a very appreciative audience whenever I have performed," says the young dancer who is shaping up to be a leading male Kathak dancer of the country. A lead dancer in the Padatik Dance Centre repertory, Souvik began his training in Kathak under the tutelage of Pt. Vijai Shekhar and Chetna Jalan. "I have completed the seven year PG course there and now I am training under Madhumita Roy," reveals Souvik who has had the good fortune of being exposed to top Kathak gurus and dancers at workshops. "I have learnt from everyone. They are so senior and talented and I have so much to learn," remarks the dancer with touching humility and adds, "I have attended workshops conducted by Pt. Birju Maharaj, Saswati Sen, Pt. Rammohan Maharaj and also Rajendra Gangan. Everywhere I had something or the other to pick up and hone my art."

Souvik has distinguished himself in performing choreographies of Pt. Birju Maharaj like `Rupmati Bazbahadur', `Romeo Juliet', `Shrishti', `Loha', `Lilangika' and `Kathak yatra'. As a dancer Souvik essays his recitals with remarkable energy and intensity and is as good in mimetic prowess as in pure technicalities of Kathak manifest in lightening footwork and flawless `mudras'.

Souvik who sponsored by ICCR has toured countries formerly with the U.S.S.R has been invited to perform in the Kalanidhi International Dance Festival and Conference in Toronto; he would also play a lead role in the productions of Menana Thakkar Dance Company touring various cities in Canada.

Among the festivals he has participated in India he has fond memories of `Vasantotsava' in Orissa sometime back where he had earned kudos for his bravura performance.
