Lord Anjaneya's bachelorhood

Sir, — This has reference to the article, "A fresh look at the bachelor deity" (Friday Review dated January 14) regarding the marital status of Sri Anjaneya. It is stated that Hanuman was not a bachelor and that the name of His consort is Suvarchala.

In the Ramayana, in the Sundara Kaandam, Suvarchala is portrayed as the wife of Surya, the Sun God. (refer Chapter 24, Sloka 9). Mother Sita tells the rakshasa women that irrespective of Sri Rama's position she will always be faithful to Him, just like Suvarchala is to Surya.

Savithri Viswanathan,

Chennai.
