Celebrating Bharati with zeal

The awardees with the chief guest Krishnaraj Vanavarayar... — Pic. by N. Balaji

SEEMINGLY OBLIVIOUS to the posse of law-enforcers, which had descended on the area to ensure the smooth conduct of the public meeting organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, those heading towards Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, in Mylapore, that Sunday evening managed to manoeuvre their way to the hall. The 123rd birthday of Subramanya Bharati was the occasion, and the celebration was by the Shriram Group of Companies. The veterans honoured with the Bharati Ilakkiya Selvar Award, by the chief guest Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, were J. Kamalanathan, Saraswathi Ramanathan, N. Balasubramaniam and T. K. S. Kalaivaanan. (The welcome address was "Avvai" Natarajan's.) But the man who stole the show with his wit, humour and casual, conversational tone was the other guest, Thenkachchi K. Swaminathan. He had the audience in splits most of the time, gave enough food for thought too and touched upon hitherto little known details about Bharati's brother, his wife Chellamma and her sister Swarnamma. Exceptionally skilled in the art of spontaneous speeches, Swaminathan was a pleasure to listen to. After his humour - laced harangue came Saraswathi Ramanathan's erudite and fiery address. When the guests adorning the stage break into a conversation among themselves even as a person is at the mike , it irks those sitting in the audience. Andwhen it happens too often, it is disconcerting to the speaker.

Impressive oratorical competitions have been a part of Shriram Group's annual endeavour in honour of Bharati. It is also a time to dwell upon his messages. This year was no exception.
