Of the word

RARELY DOES one find an established publishing house providing a forum for young writers. But premier publishing house, Media Orissa, has proved to be an exception. Last year they came out with a book of short stories written by young, vastly talented yet relatively unknown Pravas Das. This week, they extended support to another young writer of fiction, Gangotri Devi, by organising a book release function for her. Her book of short stories `Ghoongoora ra swara' was released by the state culture minister, Damodar Rout, who came out in open praise of the organisation for doing something that the government often fails to do.

Talking about the richness of Oriya literature he said that had there been translation of the poems of Kavisamrat Upendra Bhanja it could have fetched the Nobel Prize.

On women's writing

Prabhat Nalini Das spoke about women's writing in Orissa and lauded Gangotri Devi for taking up the pen to portray society around her although her profession was that of a teacher. Eminent writer and critic Biswaranjan, wrote a critique of the newly-released books and besides pointing out its strengths also advised the writer to be sensitive to a few inadequacies. Managing director of Media Orissa, Ruby Mishra, spoke on the objectives of the organisation and spelt out the commitment of Media Orissa and its sister outfits `Sanskruti O Sanskruti' and `Orissa Cine Critic Association' to the promotion of the rich heritage of Orissa's art, culture and literature.

It was an occasion for open interaction on the state of arts and literature in the State and the get-together was graced by the presence of eminent cine critic Dillip Hali, noted theatre person Raicharan Das, renowned educationist, Jugal Kishore Mishra and ace photographer, Kaliprasad Mishra.
