IN AN effort to attract children, a new show on television has selected a `star' to be the anchorperson of a programme.
Called Twinkle, this host anchors a cartoon show called `Twinkle Twinkle' on Kairali, every Friday. However, Twinkle is not just another anchor. She is a character that has been created by the animation team of Hibiscus Design, a company that creates digital contents for the web, multimedia and broadcast media.
15-minute show
What makes the show different is that the anchor, Twinkle, is a doll. According to the story, a star transformed into a doll to make friends with children on earth. The 15-minute 3-dimension cartoon show is divided into three segments - cinematic dance, a story from the Panchatantra and a section for Malayalam rhymes.
The cinematic dance segment has animals, all animated, dancing to the latest Malayalam film music; the first episode, which was aired on February 4 had chimpanzees dancing to the chartbuster `Lajjavathiye.' The animation technique is a combination of 3-D and 2-D, combining computer generated images as well as hand-painted images to give the animation a special touch vis-à-vis the technique involved.
"We wanted to show it was possible to create a programme that is entertaining and yet not very long. We also wanted a show exclusively for children that would appeal to their imagination. To keep it in the realms of fantasy, we did not want any real people in the shot. That is why we have a doll for an anchor, animal tales from the Panchatantra and Malayalam rhymes, which invariably have animals such as kittens, or ants," says Madhu KS, director of the show.
The stories from the Panchatantra and folk tales and Malayalam rhymes have been included to familiarise children with their culture, says Madhu.
Subsequent episodes will incorporate numbers, days of the week, months and so on.
