Celebrating Tyagaraja
IT'S TIME again for the Sree Shanmukhananda Sangeetha Sabha's annual Thyagaraja Music and Dance Festival. Starting this Friday, this 11-day festival dedicated to the legendary saint composer who along with Shyama Shastri and Muthuswami Dikshitar forms the `Trinity' of Carnatic music, will feature a multitude of musicians and dancers from Chennai and Delhi, at the Andhra Pradesh Bhawan and the Delhi Tamil Sangam. Entry passes can be collected at the Bhawan and Sangam offices.
As always, the sabha will also confer awards - Nadakalanidhi to vocalist Sudha Raghunathan (performing on March 6); Nadabhushanam to the Priya Sisters, Shanmukhapriya and Haripriya (performing on February 27), and violinist M. Narmada; Natya Ratna to dance gurus Kalyanasundaram Pillai, Jamuna Krishnan and Jayarama Rao; and Natya Ilavarasi to young dancers Deepa Raghavan and Deepika Reddy.
The festival provides a coveted platform to young and upcoming artistes, giving them a chance to perform alongside stalwarts. Points out S. S. Raghavan, General Secretary of the Sabha, "The first programme is usually by a local artiste, followed by one from Chennai." The festival starts with a nadaswaram recital. Deepika Reddy dances on the first day too.
