Hilarious entertainer

S.V. Krishna Reddy's new venture `Hungama' gives the much-needed break to Venumadhav, Abhinayasri and Jyothi.

Striking the high notes in comedy.

WE WERE twenty minutes earlier than the appointed time atthe A.P. Film Chamber complex in Film Nagar from where we were to be taken to the Botanical Gardens in Madhapur. The shooting for R.R. Movie Makers' "Hungama," produced by Venkat, was in progress there. So we seized the opportunity to visit the adjacent multi-temple complex on a hillock built by the film fraternity, with senior producer V.B. Rajendraprasad as its architect. For devotees, the well-maintained serene temple complex is a must visit. And if they are lucky, they can even have a chance meeting with their favourite film personalities.

At the location, a relaxed S.V. Krishna Reddy is engaged in a light-hearted conversation with his alter ego K. Atchi Reddy and the film's executive producer V. Suresh Reddy. Some male and female junior artistes donning the visitors' (to the Botanical Gardens) roles and a few real visitors are scattered in and around the location waiting to face the camera and to watch the hungama.

Senior cinematographer V. Srinivasa Reddy and his assistants are busy monitoring the light at the shooting zone employing huge butter paper screens to cut the light so that it is focused on the actors.

Comedy time

After making the necessary arrangements, the camera unit too relaxes and waits for the director to order for the clapboard and shout the conventional "start, camera, action". "It seems this time we have an early summer," says Krishna Reddy as the unit hand serves chilled buttermilk. "And summer is the best time to market comedies," smiles the director. "`Hungama' too is in the genre of `Vinodam', `Mayalodu' and `Pellam Voorelithe'," says the ace filmmaker.

Another half-an-hour is spent sipping tender coconut water and discussing the film scenario in the State. And there comes Venumadhav, the film's hero in black trousers and red-and-white tee shirt sporting a handkerchief around his neck, looking riff-raff every inch. He touches the feet of Atchi Reddy to seek his blessings. For, after all, it is they who gave him his debut in films and now made him a lead actor. He rushes towards the shooting arena as the director takes charge. The junior artistes make a circle around Venumadhav who plays the role of a petty herbs vendor. "It is the introductory scene of Venumadhav in the film. Some herbs he is selling are fake and some genuine," smiles the director as the unit shifts the camera equipment to shoot the sequence from another angle. "Ali plays the other hero. Both hail from the society's lower rung. Sunil spots them and employs them for a different purpose leading to total hilarity."

Known for his experiments with comedies, Krishna Reddy, besides taking two comedians as heroes, promoted Abhinayasri and Jyothi who were till now restricted to playing vamp roles and item dances as heroines.

"Just imagine how a duet will look like if a comedian and a vamp dance to their joy," says SVK who had composed the music too. "It will give a different tone to humour," he says as he walks towards the "visitors" shouting to them to form a perfect circle. He plans to shoot two songs in Malaysia.
