THE MUSICANS were the heroes at the Calicut University Inter-Zone Arts Festival, held at Kunnamkulam, near Thrissur. The festival brought together 1,370 students from 108 colleges. Competitions were held in 83 disciplines.
The Kalathilakam and Kalapratibha titles were conferred on Veena B. Nair of Christ College, Irinjalakuda, and Danny Sebastian of Calicut University English Department. St. Joseph College, Devagiri, won the overall championship, with a tally of 85 points. Christ College, Irinjalakuda, and Feroke College, Kozhikode, were in the second and third positions, scoring 77 and 62 points respectively.
Kalyani and Simhendra Madhyamam were the preferred ragas in the Carnatic music competition. "The students did well," said Gireesh Chandra Babu, judge of a musical event. "The performance by the team that topped the group music competition had a professional touch." Atlee D' Cunha, a judge of the western music competitions, agreed. "We found it difficult to pick the winners as the performances of all the teams were good," he said.
A pleasant combination of male and female voices and good orchestral support helped St. Thomas College take home the first prize in the western group music competition.
Music college excels
Chembai Memorial Music College, Palakkad, came up with brilliant performances in the musical events. The college won the first prize in the eastern group song competition. The students sang `Hridaya Sangeetham Pole Kalayude Keli Nadam,' composed by the college principal, Kavumvattom Vasudevan. The lyrics were penned by an alumnus of the college, Pattambi Sukumaran. The college music team comprised Shabir Ali, Anup, Shijith, Justin, Manu, Kavitha, Binu, Devaki, Nisha, Arun, Manoj, Sasi and Sudheesh.
Danny Sebastian, who topped the light music competition, is a great fan of Hariharan. His performance had voice modulations inspired by the playback singer.
Sithara Krishnakumar of Feroke College, Kozhikode, won the first prize in the Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi competitions. The dance competitions, especially Oppana, drew big crowds.
"The dance performances were good," said Umaa Nambudiripad, one of the judges. "The festival will achieve its purpose if at least some of the performers pursue their interest in dance after their college days." The literary events were held at the Sreekrishna College, Guruvayur.
Ring tone
The theme music of the festival was brought out as a mobile ringtone by the organisers. "We got the idea from the Inter-Medical College Youth Festival held last year. We roped in the same team and got the music ready. The music, composed by Dipin Nair, an MBBS student of Kozhikode Medical College and based on the Carnatic raga Kharaharapriya, was recorded at a private studio in Kozhikode. There is a great demand for CDs containing this music," said M. K. Sajeesh, chairman, Calicut University Union.
