CHITRA, THE cultural group was founded in 1951 under the aegis of Kalamandira School of Arts, by noted theatre person A.S. Murthy and S. Ramanathan.
Over the last five decades, the group has worked with several playwrights and directors. Under the guidance of A.S. Murthy, in 1973, the group gave momentum to the street theatre movement. Through most of their street plays they addressed social, economic, political and cultural problems.
Chitra, on completing 54 years, is working on Suryakanti, a play inspired by noted Kannada writer Nemichandra's book on the world-renowned painter Vincent Van Gogh.
The play unfolds the mysteries surrounding the life and work of the master painter, portraying his various facets, which he attempted to unveil through his works. A.M. Prakash, artist and Principal of Kalamandira School of Art, will be directing the play to be staged on April 4 and 5 at Rangashankara, 7.30 p.m. Prakash has directed Siri Sampige, Caucasian Chalk Circle and Vakra. He is also actively involved in children's theatre.
