TUMBI BANDHA Maatu is a collection of about twenty letters written by Shudra Srinivas to persons who have played a pivotal role in the moulding of public opinion on several vital issues. These letters written in a lucid style appear informal but are significant because they effectively unfold the various events that have taken place in the social, political, cultural and literary fields in recent times, both in and out of Karnataka. As each of these letters, whether it is written to a school teacher or an environmentalist, a literary giant or a theatre person, a religious head or a politician, attempts to give an overhaul view of the incidents that have taken place in a particular field, the book in general gains the status of an effective document. Dr. H.S. Raghavendra Rao in the foreword rightly observes that an author with an open mind can make interesting events which in normal circumstances would have been boring.
To substantiate this the letter which Shudra Srinivas writes to his one time school teacher after attending a function as an alumni could be quoted. On an autobiographical note he says how his teacher treated him with affection, a student of a socially backward community, operating with the true spirit of community, without any biases. The letter which talks of the changing scenario in the villages not only draws the attention about the changing family patterns but also the damages being done to the environment in the name of development.
Shudra's letter to the late critic D.R. Nagaraj, who left an indelible mark on the Kannada literary scene, talks of the various stages of the Dalit movement in Karnataka. The letter to the late P. Lankesh is an example to show how even a person of eminence, who could radically transform the field of literature and journalism is not free from inhibitions. In his letter to M.D. Nanjundaswamy, he discusses the status of farmer's movement.
With Prof. K.M. Marulasiddappa and H.S. Shivaprakash he talks about Kannada theatre and poetry.
