Dance drama on Lord Padmanabha

DASYAM a trust founded by Mohiniyattom exponent Gopika Varma will present Samarpanam 2005, a Mohiniyattom dance festival at Music Academy on April 9. A classical dance drama on Anantha Padmanabha Swami, presiding deity of Travancore will be presented on the occasion by Gopika Varma and her group. .
Poets from different parts of India have sung kritis on the deity in various languages such as Malayalam, Sanskrit, Hindi, Manipravalam, Tamil and Telugu. The dance-drama has been choreographed using these kritis. Music for this production has been done by the maestro Dr. Balamurali Krishna in the classical style and Kavalam Narayana Paniker in the Sopanam style. Several scholars and the book on Padmanabha Swami written by Princess Gowri Lakshmi Bai have been referred to for the project.
Choreography has been done by Mohiniyattom guru and Sangeeth Natak Academy awardee, Kalamandalam Suganthi. Folklore has been explored under the guidance of Kavalam Narayana Paniker. Ten professional dancers who have been in this field for the past ten years have been trained by Gopika Varma and Kalamandalam Suganthi. The programme on Saturday will be presided over by the Governor of Tamil Nadu Surjit Singh Barnala.
