The casual crooner

SANGEETA BAROOAH PISHAROTY

INTERVIEW Ravindra Upadhya, the winner of Channel V's Samsung Super Singer contest, speaks about what the title actually means to him.

THE WINNER: Channel V's Samsung Super Singer Ravindra Upadhya

It has been a few weeks now but winning the title of Channel V's Samsung Super Singer is yet to sink in for Ravindra Upadhya.

"It sounds clichéd but honestly, it is dream come true for me. I am yet to come to terms with it," says Ravindra. After a tiring contest that stretched to eight months when he was open to the scrutiny of big names in the Hindi film music world like Adnan Sami, Himesh Reshamiya and Sandeep Chowta, etc, Ravindra suddenly finds his face splashed across newspapers and magazines, TV flashbulbs gazing at him and passers-by giving a look of recognition.

"For a small town man like me, it is overwhelming. But I am keeping my feet on the ground," says this Jaipur resident. Love for singing accompanied Ravindra since school but it was only when he was pursuing his bachelor's degree at a local college did he actually think of giving it a try on stage. "I participated in a few college competitions, won some awards but that was it. I was bitten by the bug which began to ask me quite often, `Singing is fine but what would you do for a living?' I ended up joining a law course," he relates. Soon armed with an LLB degree, he started practicing law. "And one fine day, I happened to see the Samsung Super Singer ad on Channel V, just thought of giving it a try and look, what it has done to me!" he exclaims.

A handful

Ravindra is so busy recording his songs now that he has not been able to spare time to visit Jaipur. "My friends are complaining that they see me now only on Channel V," laughs Ravindra. Naming work projects already at hand, he says, "I have already recorded songs for a Telugu film by Sandeep Chowta. Also, I am singing for a film Kisme Kitna Hai Dum with Amit Kumar. Its music is by Adnan Sami. I am also preparing to sing for Himesh Reshamiyaji." Besides, he is also crooning four solo numbers for the music album to be brought out by Channel V as per the contest rules.

"For a man on the street like me, these are really big happenings. But the last eight months have taught me one big virtue - patience. It has taught me to breathe easy," says Ravindra. So, is that then the real secret behind his success? "It is up to others to guess," he smiles.
