Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma was honoured with a Gandapenderam.

A fine Bharatnatyam recital by Srivani from Mumbai marked the Ugadi Puraskar Sabha organised by Vedic Seva Trust at Kalabharati on Saturday last. The execution of footwork, posture, mudra, etc., was accomplished with supreme felicity coupled with aesthetic expression. "Sivapaadam" depicting the "tandava" and `laasya' attributes of Siva and Shakti. "Mamavasada," the various facets of "Mahishasuramardhani" and Annamayya's "Bhavayami," besides "Gopalabaalam" the childhood pranks of Lord Krishna, stood out.

The sabha started with the welcome address by the trust's president, P. Gopalakrishna Murty, followed by the "Anugrahabhaashanam" rendered by Sadguru K. Sivananda Murty of the Bheemili Ashram. Then followed the felicitation of renowned litterateur and `Pravachana Vidwanmani' Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma. A golden anklet was presented to him by Polaraju Suryanarayana Murty and his wife Gangabhavani, amidst "mangalavaadyam" and "veda pathanam."

Sarma felicitated

Born in 1967, at Aska in Ganjam district of Orissa, Sarma after obtaining a Honours degree in Economics from Berhampur University, served on the editorial board of the Telugu monthly Swathi for seven years from 1988. He later started his own monthly Rishipeetham replete with articles highlighting the Vedic culture, its values and traditions.

Delivering discourses on the same theme with penchant, he soon realised that he could reach the commoner and even the laity much better by using his oratory skills and knowledge of the scriptures. No wonder, the sadguru himself an authority on "Sanathana Dharma" and its values, was all praise for Sarma for the missionary zeal with which he made highly laudable strides already as a "pravachana vidwan" at a young age of 38 years.

Gurivilli Appanna (nadaswaram) and his brother Durga Rao (dolu), Sarada Subrahmanyam and Chaitanya brothers (music), K.G.R. Gandhi (drama), M. Usha Rani (dance), CNSN Rao (magic) were also given the "Ugadi Puraskar" on the occasion.
