Veteran artistes honoured

Felicitation It was a befitting honour for several senior artistes on Ugadi day celebrations.

Seven eminent personalities belonging to different cultural fields were honoured on the occasion of "Ugadi" - the Telugu New Year day jointly by the Department of Cultural Affairs and the District Cultural Council.

The day-long function was held at the Government College of Music and Dance, Vijayawada. The District Collector K. Prabhakar Reddy, chaired the programme.

The programme which started with "nadaswaram" followed by an interesting "kavi sammelanam" involving noted poets, Jandhyala Mahathi Shanker, P. Syamalananda Prasad, Pingali Venkata Krishna Rao, T.K. Choodamani, G. Sambasiva Rao, Kusuma Tandavakrishna and N.Ch. Jagannadhacharyulu. After the traditional "panchanga sravanam" by Dhulipala Ramakrishna, competitions were held in essay writing, debate and traditional costume wearing. The fitting climax to the function was the felicitation of Balantrapu Rajanikanta Rao, eminent composer, scholar, musicologist and researcher; .Mikkilineni Venkateswara Rao and Achanta Venkataratnam Naidu, both veteran stage actors; well known violin "vidwans" Annavarapu Ramaswamy and K.V. Reddy; noted scholar Burra Radhakrishna Sarma and Karnati Lakshminarasaiah, a veteran stage actor and an authority on folk arts.

The event came to a close with group songs rendered by music college students and a Kuchipudi dance "Vache chaitra masamu" directed by Bhagavathula Venkatarama Sarma.

In another two-day "Ugadi" related event organised by "Nritya Ravali" at the same venue, the lively vocal duet by Vishnubhotla sisters, Saraswathi and Krishnaveni enthralled the gathering. The sisters who have already carved a niche for themselves in the musical arena as one of the best singing pair, started with "Saveri varnam" and followed with "Bala Ganapati" in Hamsadhvani "Marugelara" in Jayantasri, and "Brova bharama" in Bahudari. The main item was "Ninne Namminanu" in Todi in which the sisters vied with each other in rendering the alapana and kalpana swaras and came out in flying colours.

P. Nageswara Rao on violin, B.V.S. Prasad on mridangam and I. Anjaneya Sastri on the ghatam gave Saraswathi and Krishnaveni fine instrumental support. After the concert, some Kuchipudi dance items were presented by Vedantham Venkatachalapathi, V. Kiran, D. Sirisha and Priyadarsini.

Noted veena vidwan and principal of the Government College of Music and Dance, Vijayawada, Ayyagari Syamasunder was felicitated on the occasion.

The felicitation function was presided over by Ambati Madhumohana Krishna, president of "Nritya Ravali" and the chief guest was the District Collector, K. Prabhakar Reddy. Annavarapu Ramaswamy presented a golden bracelet to Syamasunder. Syamasunder's wife, Jayalakshmi, was also honoured by her students and admirers. Several speakers including the District Collector complimented Syamsunder for his outstanding contributions.
