TALENTED youngsters put up an exceptionally good show at a programme organised by Thalam, a cultural trust. The programme was part of Thalam's efforts to promote young talent in Kerala. "Although we do not approve of the way youth festivals are conducted now, we respect the talent and artistry of our youngsters. We will continue to promote young talent. From next year we are planning an annual festival by selecting talent from all over Kerala," say V.K Gopinath who coordinated the show and Nalini Chandran, chairperson of Thalam.
The show began with a captivating performance by Abhishek A.V. on the drums. This was followed by a Mohiniyattam performance by Rakhee Ravindran, Kuchupudi by Meghana K, Bharatanatyam by Ranjima Mohan and Shihab R.M., and Mohiniyattam by Reshmi M.
Soothing recital
Students who had won prizes for Carnatic vocal, violin and mridamgom were brought together for a recital that lasted 25 minutes. They chose to perform `Re re manasa' in raga Natta, Dikshitar's `Bajere chitham' (Kalyani raga) and `Pipare rama rasam' in Ahir Bhairav, the delineation of which were as soothing as a mid-summer shower.
This was followed by a Kathaprasangam by Veena B. Nair, who told the story of King Ashoka. Anju Narayanan, who won the first prize for Chakyarkoothu and Koodiyattam, narrated the story of `Doothu' from the Mahabharata for her Koothu performance. Anju's performance took a dig at contemporary politics as well, much to the enjoyment of the audience. The show concluded with a mono act by Anila W. Chirayath. Too much of make-up over shadowed the aharya aspect of the dance performances. Shihab, the only male dancer, exhibited more of feminine grace, thus underplaying the scope of masculine aspects of classical Bharatanatyam. What caused consternation was that almost all the artistes, especially dancers, were taken home by their guardians once their performances were over. It is essential for budding artistes to learn to appreciate the performance of other artistes.
