Dastkar Andhra's work with the weavers in remote parts of Andhra Pradesh is one of the great NGO success stories of our times.
By giving the weavers sustained work with design inputs that use their skills in contemporary formats and by marketing their products Dastkar has ensured better economic wages for the weavers and increased the awareness on Andhra's cotton weaving heritage.
Opening today at Amethyst (Sundar Mahal, Rani Padmavathiar Road, Gopalapuram) is Dastkar's Khadi Collection, a range of Ponduru khadi sarees and dupattas which epitomise khadi at its softest elegant best.
The earth coloured, soft-hued sarees and dupattas with plain bodies, or in gentle stripes and checks have temple borders in matching and constrasting shades.
Only vegetable dyes are used in the khadi sarees. Other ways to beat the summer heat the Dastkar way are mellow Kalamkari sarees and yardage in vegetable dyes.
Also on view are handloom Andhra cotton sarees outstanding for their woven and zari borders.
