Rich repertoire to the fore

The Carnatic vocal concerts by Chandrabhanu and Sayi Kartikeya for different sabhas were engaging.

Ksheerasagara Sabha gave Chandrabhanu an opportunity to further her efforts to become a good concert vocalist. The concert of this young Carnatic vocalist was held at Thyagaraya Gana Sabha in Hyderabad. V.N. Prasad accompanied her on violin and K. Srinivasa Rao on mridangam.

Having trained under seasoned gurus like Avadaiammal and Meenakshi Sundara Bhagavatar, and later Nirmala Krishnan, of Tirunelveli, she has passed that higher grade in Indian music (vocal) of the Government of Tamil Nadu. In Hyderabad, she was groomed by Neti Srirama Sarma and D. Seshachari (of `Hyderabad Brothers' fame). Chandrabhanu had an ambitious list of chosen numbers to present, reflecting her rich repertoire. There were also some rarely heard numbers like Raka Sasivadana in raga Dhakka. Kalyani and Kambhoji were the two major melodies she presented almost consecutively. The composition Himadrisuta of Shyama Sastry in Kalyani was the best-rendered piece.

The violinist too added his own might taking as much time as the vocalist took. He did so even in the case of Kambhoji. This added to the lengthening of concert time. Sayi Kartikeya is a leading vocalist among teenage talent. He learned initially from his grandmother Malathi, a veena player, and then from Kolleigal Subramanyam and N.S. Srinivasan. He developed his own individual style suiting his sareeram.

Teen talent

He is regarded as child prodigy, who began giving concerts at an early age. This young artiste sang for Sujanaranjani at its venue in Hanmuan Devasthanam auditorium, Sanathnagar. K.V. Krishna accompanied him on violin and Janardan was on mridangam. Sayi opened with the Saveri varnam Sarasuda of PatnamSayi presented rare numbers like Marachevadana in Kedaram of Thygaraja.

The brief swarakalpana was pleasing. Idi Samayamura is also a rare one in Chayanata. After a couple of kriti renditions — Bantu Reeti (Hamsanadam) and Nagumomu in Abheri — Sayi took up a major raga Kalyani for extensive delineation and did it well. Ninu Vina Gati of Subbaraya Sastri was Sayi's choice. The Taniavartanam by Janardan was soothing.
