VOCAL MAGIC Rajam Iyer at his vocal concert.
The Visakha Music Academy featured a vocal recital by the Sangeetha Kalanidhi award recipient, B. Rajam Iyer of Chennai in Kalabharathi. While his prime disciple V. Subrahmanyam excellently sang in tandem, Akashvani staffers N.C. Madhav on the violin and V.V. Ramana Murthy on the mridangam along with young but well accomplished M. Sridhar on the ghatam lent exquisite support.
The 82-year-old Rajam seems to be still going strong. From the word go starting with the Ananda Bhairavi varnam till he concluded on a scintillating note with a thillana in Khamas, he literally cast a spell. After evocatively rendering Ekadantam of Dikshitar (Bilahari), he expansively elaborated Paripoornakama of Thyagaraja (Poorvikalyani), Yevarikai Avataaramethithivo of the same composer. The prefix of aalapana was a reflection of his scholarly grip on manodharma. He took up Pasupatheeswaram (Subhapantuvarali) and created an ecstatic mood all around. Rendition of Padavi Neesadbhakthi (Salagabhairavi) next and an adept ragam, taanam, pallavi (Khanda Jhampe) that followed, further transported the mood deep into realms of sublime ecstasy.
The swarakalpana in Ragamalika comprising Athana, Dharmavathi and Behag was a special attraction. Then followed a slokam in Dhanyasi and a soul soothing alapana of Mohana for Narasimhaagatcha before the conclusion with the Khamas thillana.
