Appealing concert

G.B. Prasad's Annamacharya keertanas ended the Sri Ramanavami festivities.

ON A SONG Noted vocalist Garimella Balakrishna Prasad rendering Annamacharya Keertans.

On the final day of the nine-day long Sri Ramanavami celebration held at Sri Dasanjaneya Swamy temple, Satyanarayanapuram, Garimella Balakrishna Prasad, a seasoned singer working in the Annamacharya Project, Tirupathi, gave a fine concert of Annamacharya Sankeertanas.

Prasad, endowed with a sweet and mellow voice, is also a reputed composer has tuned innumerable Annamacharya keertanas and published them with notation. Many of his cassettes have become immensely popular.

Prasad was ably supported by Palaparthi Nageswara Rao (on the violin), Puligadda Pandu (tabla) and Devadas rhythm instruments).

Balakrishna Prasad began his recital with a Sanskrit slokam in Bouli and followed it with Saranantimatani, a keertana written by Tallapaka Peda Tirumalacharyulu, grandson of Annamayya. This was tuned appealingly in Lalita by Prasad.

Among the rest of the recital were popular compositions of Prasad's guru Sangeeta Kalanidhi Nedunuri Krishnamurthy. Some of the outstanding tunes he rendered were Nee namame in Tilang, Gatulanni in Mohana, Atade Ekanga Veerudu in Thodi, Gnana yagnameegathi in Brindavani and Viswaprakasunaku in Hamsanadam.

Mainly the qualities that made Balakrishna Prasad's concert so appealing were his smooth vocals , clear diction and the devotional fervour with which he rendered the keertanas. The brief introduction he gave before each keertana was very enlightening and explicit.

P.SURYA RAO
