And now Sania

THE STAR: Sania Mirza

SANIA MIRZA is MTV's new Ubharta Sitara. But the bigger news is MTV's ongoing process to pick the Icon of the Year. After selecting Anil Ambani in 2003 and Rahul Dravid last year, the channel has let open the platform to its young viewers to vote for their icon for year 2005.

Giving reasons for the institution of such an award, Alex Kuruvilla, Managing Director, MTV Networks India says, "The MTV Youth Icon is a platform created for the youth to identify their idols. Success stories of stalwarts like Dravid and Anil Ambani have inspired the youth to achieve what their idols have. This year too, the nomination list is a virtual powerhouse of performers in their own fields."

He says the votes of the viewers would be collected on-line through www.mtvindia.com. One can also SMS "ICON" to 6882 and vote for their choice. Voting has already begun from March 18 and will continue till May 1. "The winner will be announced on June 10," Kuruvilla adds.

Presented by Samsung, the nomination includes Sonia Gandhi, Shah Rukh Khan, Sonu Nigam, Manish Malhotra, Irfan Pathan, Azim Premji and Sania Mirza.
