Kalpadruma's new Handicraft store ( 72, Cathedral Road, Chennai - 86.) offers a complete craft experience compounded with an evocative period venue, interior walls sporting folk, tribal and craft murals and a quality craft collection which is traditional and exuberant, innovative and rare.
The turmeric yellow façade of the Kalpadruma handicrafts boutique with its life-size paintings from Ramayana and a collection of huge terracotta water pots at the entrance give an idea of what is in store inside. The interiors showcase works of craft such as Madhubani art, Rajasthani fresco painting, tribal art and famous kutch clay art. Also on display are beautifully crafted, bronze and brass icons, figurines and artefacts, painted wooden icons, figures, wall hangings and brackets, superbly sculpted sandalwood figures, carved wooden chests, marble and metal objects d'art, Thanjavur, Kalamkari and Orissa tribal paintings as well as many rare and unusual craft objects.
To make it easier for the shopper, separate rooms showcase different genres of traditional handskills and craft mediums. An unusual 2 ft tall brass horse with five heads, a pallankuzhi chessboard, tiny enamel silver figurines from Jaipur and replicas of ancient matkas are some of the items to fascinate the visitors.
