`I love challenges'

SUBHASH K. JHA

Aishwarya Rai is getting global recognition as an actress.

YOUNG ACHIEVER : At the Time magazine's party in New York.

She is certainly going places. From being a jury member at Cannes to being on 60 Minutes, on the list of Time magazine's 100 young achievers and the Oprah Winfrey show. Aishwarya Rai has moved from the domestic to the global arena. Excerpts from an interview:

I believe you made Oprah wear a sari on her talk show?

Yes, I was extremely happy to be on her show. I absolutely admire and adore her. I never thought I'd actually be meeting her...and that too on her show. She put me in the `Woman Of The World' section. Her very efficient team did all the spadework within no time. The procedure was meticulous. On the evening of the "Bride & Prejudice" premiere they did a quick interview. The next day I rushed to Chicago to record with Oprah.

And the sari?

Yes I thought I'd wear one on the show, and had packed two of them, in case Oprah too wanted to wear one. As luck would have it my flight was delayed and I reached minutes before the show went on air. So I had no time to change. Oprah was very curious about the sari. And I helped her wear it, on air.

A part of Bollywood insists you're going to Hollywood?

Every time I'm asked if I intend to go to Hollywood I insist I'd do films there just as I've done two Tamil films ("Iruvar" and "Kandukondain Kandukondain") and in Bengali ("Chokher Bali"). There's no dearth of tempting offers at home. I'd rather talk about what's happening in my career. Like Raj Santoshi's "Samna." And ``Dhoom" with Hrithik.

You've been chosen as one of Time magazine's 100 finest young achievers?

Oh you know about that? People are so busy playing up my so-called boring image. But yes, I did attend the Time party in New York and also did a photo-session for an American magazine.

What are your international projects?

I've just completed Paul Berges' "Mistress Of Spices" ... It's a very Indian film. This is a masala film with a difference. It's all about the spices their scents and significances. And now I leave to shoot Jagmohan Mundhra's "Provoked" for a start-to-finish schedule in London. I play the central character to give a known face to the woman's plight. The supporting roles are also powerful.

These aren't routine roles.

But I have never pursued ordinary roles. From the start I've searched for challenges as an actress. That remains unchanged.
