A fresh look
N. Geethacharya is releasing his new book
Utter the word Haridasa and what immediately comes to the mind is the impressive list of names, beginning with Purandaradasa, who lived in the years and centuries gone by and propagated Dwaita philosophy. But wait.
There lived a whole lot of dasas in Karnataka who espoused the Vishishtadvaitha philosophy too. Those interested in the topic will immediately sit up and take notice.
Years of research pouring into the collections of songs of those in the Vishishtadvaita lineage, perusing manuscripts, holding discussions has led N. Geethacharya, Kannada Professor, Seshadripuram College, Bangalore, to compile a list of Srivaishnava dasas and their songs. And force a new look into the world of Dasa Sahitya and Kannada literature itself. His inspiration: his father and dasa, Narayana Sharma.
Prof. Geetacharya set up the Narayana Sharma Samskriti Kendra in 1983 and identified 16 Srivaishnava dasas and over 2,000 songs sung by them. After Haridasa Sahityada Mooru Darigalu, his next book is Vichara Goshti (to be released on May 15, Sunday, at the B.M. Shree Memorial Foundation, Bangalore) to further the research in this field and highlight how Haridasa Sahitya encompasses and benefits all sections of society. Scholars from all over the country are participating in the meet. This is also the tenth anniversary of the Narayanasharma Samskriti Kendra. A compilation of the songs of Belur Vaikuntadasa will also be released on the occasion.
