Rabindra sangeet and dance drama marked the 144th birthday anniversary of the Nobel Laureate.

Family entertainer The play `Language' dealt with a contemporary theme.
Poet, fiction writer, song writer and composer, playwright and painter Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 7, 1861.Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 he introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature. Tagore's 144th birthday was celebrated at Rabindra Mandap by the city-based cultural organisation Pragati.
The celebrations began with a dance by young artistes of Pragati. The dance was based on a well-known Rabindra sangeet composition Mom chitte, gitti nithe, tata thai thai and the young dancers put up a spirited performance. Tagore has written more than 2000 songs many of which have become extremely popular. Accomplished singer Mohana Chatterjee from Kolkata showcased her talents at rendering Rabindra Sangeet.
The evening's programme came to a close with Tagore's well-known dance drama Shapmochan, a story of love and rejection and expiation through suffering.
Kolkata-based Shinjan performed the dance drama that was directed by Kohinoor Sen Barat.
It was a two-day festival. The previous evening Pragati had presented a family entertainer Language.
The play, directed by Sushil Choudhury and written by Debendu Guha, had a contemporary theme dealing with the cultural crossroads that most of the youngsters find themselves in today due to the hybridisation of languages under the impact of the western.
