The play `Sri Venkateswara Mahatyam' was an nteresting production staged by the members of DRDO.

Rare mythological play Sri Venkateswara Mahatyam was staged by DRDO Scientific and Cultural Organisation last week at Ravindra Bharati, which was co-sponsored by the department of Culture . It was written in 1946 by Jampana Chandrasekhara Rao, on the request of star hero of stage Banda Kanakalingeswara Rao. After Banda, Pridhvi Venkateshwara Rao took up this play.
This play is based on the Sthala Purana of Tirumala. The production highlights some of the magical incidents related to this story, like a shepherd getting back his eyesight which he lost after accidentally hitting on the head of the lord, stationed in an anthill on Tirumala hills and Vakula changing into a garland and adorning the Lord's neck. There is a little bit of story about the hundi where money is dropped which would go to Kubera as interest to the money he lent to the wedding of Srinivasa with Padmavati.
The play opened with the story of sage Bhruga hurting Mahalakshmi, . The rest of the events lead Mahalakashmi and Mahavishnu leaving their abode and coming down to earth where they stay as Srinivasa and Padmavati. Vakula, known to be Yasoda in her previous birth, adopts Srinivasa. He lives with her in her hermitage.
K. Murali played both the important roles of Maha Vishnu and Srinivasa and rendered meaningfully the many verses written for these characters. K. Chalapati Rao in the musical role Narada, N. Bhavani as Lakshmi and later as Padmavati regaled the audience with good performances and with impressive rendition of verses and songs. The play used the available backdrop and curtains of Ravindra Bharati stage. Pridhvi Venkateswara Rao's musical support on harmonium and his training of the artistes bore fruit in the shape of a sensible and interesting production.
