SANGEETA BAROOAH PISHAROTY

Kitu Gidwani returns to where she belongs with "Siddhanth".

HOMECOMING: Kitu Gidwani Photo: R. Ragu

Think of Kitu Gidwani and the image of a polished, urbane beauty with a charming smile and a husky voice all at once come to the mind. She can't just fit in a ghagra choli, gaon ki gori picture you know, but that no way becomes a limitation when it comes to proving her acting credentials. Be it plays, films or her mainstay, television, she has established her ability for dramatics quite skilfully.

But then, the lady went missing from the screen for quite sometime, leaving you wondering, where had she vanished. We saw her recently in Kesar on Star Plus in the role of an ultra-mod manipulative mother-in-law. But that was a short stint. And this week, we have seen her in Siddhanth on Star One, and that again is an one-episode affair, you blink and you miss her.

Ask Kitu about this hide and seek game and with that husky tone, she replies, "But I don't miss television. In the 90s I used to slog 35 days a month but now I am choosy." Family matters and lot of travelling kept her away from acting for quite some time, she adds.

Ravi Rai serial

Kitu's next appearance on TV would be in a Ravi Rai serial on Zee TV. But neither does she know the name yet nor when it is to be on air. But having seen her in impressive roles in serials like Swabhimaan, Junoon, Air Hostess etc in the good old days, and a name like Ravi Rai of Thoda Hai Thode Ki Zaroorat Hain fame producing it, you know it is worth a wait. Unless the script falls victim to the TRP war, causing road accidents to justify the sudden entry or exit of a new actor in the serial, skipping 20 years hence to attract young viewers and such gimmicks. But till that knocks your door, what would keep Kitu busy are a few crossover films and plays. "I shall be seen in a crossover film by Seema Anand from Delhi. Most probably, it would be in English based on the idea as to what it means to be an Indian," says the actress who bagged the prestigious French award Nantes for her acting in the film Dance of the Wind besides picking up The Most Popular Film by the Channel 4.

Also, Kitu has just travelled to London with the play Feroza Among The Firangis.
