Mature steps of an ace dancer

PERFECTION Usha Venkateshwaran's choreography was masterly

The choreographic skills of Usha Venkateshwaran shone forth in the dance presentation entitled Shrishti at Ravindra Kalakshetra. That Usha is a veteran in the field of Bharatanatya and her artistry is mature was evident throughout the presentation. Her students from Natyalakshana also rose to the occasion in the delineation of the mythological theme. There was intimate camaraderie and spirit of joie de vivre in their approach and execution of the subject assigned to them.

The manifestation of Lord Shiva or the Lord of Dance in his varied forms was the subject matter. Lyrical support drawn from Rigveda and other Sanskrit sources lent an authenticity and wholesomeness to the theme. The process of shrishti or the creation of the universe was well depicted with the aid of appropriate props on the stage. The creation of five elements and the concept of Ardhanareeshwara were dealt well.

The technique of Bharatanatya was explored to the fullest extent yielding rich dividends. The scenes of Shiva and Parvathi's wedding and the Tripura Samhaara were the best examples in this regard.

The composition of the dance in the portrayal of cosmic dance of Shiva vouched for the expert choreographer Usha Venkateshwaran's excellent mastery over her idiom, which was enriched by a delightful musical support. The start seemed a little too crisp.

Both rhythm and techniques were however correct in the rendition. Music and movement seemed to form well-knit patterns.
