Kannada films get starry

After Bachchan and Kamal Haasan, Kannada films might see Rajnikanth too.

Close to the re-entry of Kamal Haasan into Kannada cinema after a gap of over 17 years and the superstar Amitabh Bachhan's reported move to enter it, there is now news about Tamil superstar Rajnikanth getting back to Kannada cinema after two decades.
These developments have indeed given a special momentum to Kannada cinema. With the venture of Ramesh (Ramesh Arvind for Tamil film buffs) to bring back Kamal Haasan, writer-director Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar's much talked of success in signing Bachhan for his new film Amrutha Dhaare and the move to bring back Rajnikanth are likely to change the scenario of Kannada cinema in the coming days.
H.D. Gangaraj, President, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, a major distributor of Rajnikanth's films in Karnataka, says, a few producers have been trying to bring back Rajnikanth for the past three years.
"It looks like the time has come now. Some directors have brilliant original scripts to support his homecoming and to refurbish his image as an artiste beyond parochial barriers." He says it should not be construed as a move to counter Haasan's re-entry into Kannada cinema. It should only be seen as an attempt to accommodate and honour artistes of that calibre in Kannada, he added.
Rajnikanth has acted in many original Kannada films, including Putanna Kangal's Katha Sangama, Joe Simeon's Ondu Premada Kathe and K. Balchander's Tappida Taalagalu. But he is yet to do a full-length original Kannada film, after he became a Tamil superstar. Haasan has acted only in four Kannada films. Barring the first, Kokila, the others were remakes. His Pushpaka Vimana, though technically a Kannada film, was a silent film. His latest one on the sets, Rama- Shyama- Bhama is also said to be a remake of his Tamil hit, Sathi Leelavathi. Gandhinagar talks of plans though to approach Haasan with an original script.
