Play of old and new themes



EPIC SAGA Ramacharita Manasa had Hanuman narrating the tale of Rama

Brahma-Vidya, a cultural organisation established in 1990, presented Sriranga's play and a dance ballet based on Ramacharitha Manasa of Saint Tulasidas at Jaganmohan Palace, Mysore, under the stewardship of Prof. R Satyanarayana, renowned writer and musicologist.

The institution had earlier produced a few dance and music features with innovative concepts and Rasa Sanje was one such event, designed for budding talents.

Students' moods

Hannoduvare, a play by the well-known playwright Sriranga, depicted the moods of students on their way to college. The young artistes were natural in their performance, but the theme was not properly explored.

The dance feature Ramacharita Manasa of Saint Tulasidas at the same venue, was a maiden venture by the choreographer Radhika Nandakumar, in which Lord Hanuman (Master Sumukh) himself narrates Ramayana to the saint. However, this phenomenal conception needed restraint. Nevertheless, the portrayal of vatsalyabhava by Kousalya (Kumari Latha) on the child Rama was true to life. The other episodes of Balakanda needed more maturity.

Good concert

Vocal concert by Master Karthik, disciple of vidwan R.S. Nandakumar was good. Blessed with an impressive tonal melody, the artiste delineated raga and svarakalpana with ease. The concluding composition "Kadagola Taarenna Chinnave" of Sri Purandara Dasaru in raga Yaman was well rendered.

The effort of the organisers to provide timely opportunity for the budding talents was appreciable.

The vocal concert by Suguna Purushottam at Sri Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha, Mysore, was an opportunity to hear some of the erstwhile popular compositions. The artiste never took pains to delineate the essence of ragas. The vocal concert by Suguna Purushottam at Mysore Vasudevacharya Bhavana was a mediocre one, with the artiste leaving the ragas unexplored.

Vidwan H.K. Narasimha Murthy on violin filled the gap of ragabhava with dexterity. The neraval in "Lambodara" (Mysore Vasudevacharya) "Aravindalaye Taye" in Kedaragoulai (Purandara Dasaru) "Bhajare re Manasa" in Abheri were indifferent.

The thrust of the entire concert was to lay a special emphasis on compositions by Mysore composers. And hence one saw a maximum number of renditions of Mysore Vasudevacharya.

Rare ragas like Dharmavati ("Bhajanaseyarada") and the demonstration of Lakshmisha Tala was interesting.

The notable part of the concert was the violin support with impressive percussion (mridanga) support.
