Consecration at Singapore
DIVINE PARADE: The utsavar taken out after Mahasamprokshanam.
The consecration of South-East Asia's biggest Vaishnavite temple and a national monument with a rich history dating back to150 years, the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, took place on last Sunday.
More than 20,000 devotees had gathered at the temple since dawn to witness the consecration and amid incessant chants of `Om Namo Narayanaya.' The priests bathed the temple's golden `kalasams' with holy water at 9 a.m. Situated on Serangoon Road Singapore's Little India and between two Saivite temples, the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple comes under the direct purview of the Hindu Endowments Board.
Renovated
In preparation of the kumbabishekam, the temple was renovated at a cost of 2.5 million dollars and a new `vasantha mandapam' has been added to the temple to ease the congestion in the main sanctum and facilitate the worshipping of processional deities.
Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Law, Professor S. Jayakumar, was the guest of honour. He said a temple must not only be a place for worship but also serve as cultural hub for the Indian community. Jayakumar also called upon the Indian community to share their heritage and culture with non-Hindus to create a better understanding among the various communities.
