Crammed show

The Orissa Dance Academy's annual fest became a crowded affair on stage.

Chaotic mix The stage was full up with the artistes.

Orissa Dance Academy held its annual dance festival with the usual resplendence. But with its growing stature and student strength, the academy in a bid to give every student a chance ended up making it a crowded affair on stage.

After felicitations to senior artistes the cultural programme of the two-day event opened with a group mangalacharanKrushnaya Tuvyam Namah choreographed by Guru Gangadhar Pradhan. It was followed by Saveri Pallavi, a Guru Kelucharan choreography.

The programme was a mix of the classical and the folk, and so there was palli nrutya (dance of the rural folk) too. Rumku Jhuma and Sashughara Bahu gave a different flavour.

The first evening ended with a dance drama Bali Sugriba. But before that, the abhinay piece — Thankamana Chalajiba, a popular devotional song, was a winner.

The second evening opened with a Ganesh Vandana by young dancers of the academy . The pallavi item was set on Raag Basant.

Based on an episode from myths associated with Lord Jagannath, the dance ballet Manika Gauduni came up next and was followed by palli nrutya and dance drama.

Though Guru Gangadhar Pradhan tried to give variety to the programme, it got clumsily crowded. The delay in the commencement of the cultural items hardly helped the cause.

The sound and light system also failed at times.

The academy would do well to plan this festival properly rather than trying to treat it as a platform to all its students once a year.

There could be group items but the pick of the lot could be presented in solo and duet items, preferably new choreographies.
