Paean to a maestro

Singers remembered late maestro Balakrushna Dash in an evening of melody.

Sangeet Sudhakar Balakrushna Dash Foundation observed the 83rd birth anniversary of the late maestro Balakrushna Dash with pomp. Balakrushna Dash was a redoubtable guru in Odissi music and, apart from being a singer of rare sensitivity and talent; he was also a music composer of eminence. His scores in Oriya films remain hummable to this day.

So, it was an honour for the singer Pranab Kishroe Patnaik to be conferred the title `Sangeet Saraswati' on the occasion of this function. Patnaik later paid a heart-warming tribute to the maestro by singing one of his all time hits — Nayane sunayana re. Eminent Veena exponent Jogiraj patra was honoured with the title `Vadya Saraswati'. It was heartening to note that, to carry forward the legacy of the late guru, a scholarship has been instituted in his name. The `Balakrushna Foundation scholarship' was given to young singer Pradeep Kumar Das of Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya.

After the speakers paid tributes to Balakrushna Dash's genius, it was left to singers like Keshb Chandra Rout, Laxmikanta Palit and Ramahari Das and many others to pay tribute to their guru by singing his compositions. A function of this stature need not have been marred by delayed start and indiscipline on stage while the meeting was on. It should have been out-and-out a musical evening as a paean to the late Balakrushna Dash and speeches were definitely irritating and dispensable oddities.
