PRETTY AND POISED: Sada
Director Shanker's "Anniyan" is much looked forward to. The fans of actor Vikram can't wait for the release slated for June 17. The mega budget venture has indeed raised the expectations of movie buffs on the whole. Yet another star for whom "Anniyan" could be a landmark is Sada. If "Jayam," her debut film in Telugu, was a runaway hit, the Tamil remake of the same title was a great success too. Subsequently, she teamed up with Madhavan and Srikanth and is all excited about Shanker's blockbuster. Excerpts from an interview:
Sada is an unusual name. What does it mean?
My original name is Sadaf, meaning oyster. My father is a Muslim and my mother was a Hindu, before her marriage. When I decided to act, it became Sada.
You must be eagerly waiting for "Anniyan" release. Now, how did you land the role?
Well, I was shooting in Bangkok for a Kannada film. My mother called me to say that director Shanker's office was asking for my dates. I never imagined that I would get an offer from one of best directors of Indian cinema, quite early in my career. When I came back to Chennai, director Shanker's production manager got in touch with me. And I was thrilled.
Can you say something about your role?
I cannot reveal the story. But I can tell you that mine is a simple homely character etched elegantly in typical Shanker style.
In a male-dominated film, with Vikram hogging the limelight, where, do you think, you will stand? Here, I wish to state that Shanker first asked Aishwarya Rai for dates. She was too busy and the choice fell on me. In other words, I don't think director Shanker would have visualised a role without scope for his heroine.
I worked for 120 days. The shooting went off very well. I have not seen the rushes. But there are scenes that will prove my mettle. And I'm confident that director Shanker has packaged it beautifully.
Can you recall the first day of the shooting?
The first day of the shooting did not take place in India. Amsterdam it was and I was standing in the middle of a tulip garden, waiting for the director's signal. He was not in front of me, but in an aircraft with his cameraman. When I got the signal, I started to run. One step and I heard a noise. The front portion of my ghagra dress had given way. I didn't want a retake of the first shot and managed to complete it. Later I learnt it has come out well. I cannot forget the panic I felt for a fleeting moment.
Will "Anniyan" be a turning point in your career?
Is it not too early to say? Let's wait and watch.
You are playing a Hindu girl in the film. What does religion mean to you?
Well, I am secular. In "Anniyan," I'm playing a devoted Iyengar Brahmin girl. Director Shanker helped me with a lot of inputs and generally was very supportive in the shaping of my character.
What are the other projects you are doing?I have not signed any film after "Anniyan." I'd rather wait before deciding my course of action. However, good directors and reputed production houses will be my choice. I am now doing only one film — "Priyasaki" with Madhavan directed by K. S. Adhiyaman. But I'm quite busy in Telugu and Kannada. A couple of Hindi offers have also come my way.
