Rama Raju remembered

Tributes were paid to Ganapathiraju Atchuta Rama Raju, founder-president of Visakha Sahithi.

Visakha Sahithi, a literary body of repute, paid homage to its founder-president, AU Kalaaprapoorna awardee, Ganapathiraju Atchuta Rama Raju, at a function last Saturday. The programme, which was attended by noted personalities from different professions and luminaries from the field of literature, theatre and art, was held in the conference hall of the public library in Dwarakanagar.

Former AU Telugu professor, Kolavennu Malayavasini, also the President of the Sahithi, chaired the session while former Mayor and well-known advocate D.V. Subba Rao, noted playwright, novelist, short story writer and cine actor Gollapudi Maruthi Rao and former Head of Department of library science at AU, G.V.S.L. Narasimha Raju, were guests of honour.

They recalled the commitment with which the late Raju contributed to the theatre as also the entire literary firmament through Visakha Nataka Kalaaparishat and Visakha Sahithi, which he founded between the late 40s and early 50s. Many a noted writer, actor, singer and director besides playwrights, novelists, short story writers and literary critics were active members in the two associations. Speaking one after the other, the distinguished speakers hailed Atchuta Rama Raju as an institute by himself.

It was resolved unanimously at the end to request the authorities concerned to install Raju's bronze statue on Beach Road. The members also expressed their wish to bring his innumerable number of prefaces, in books written in English and Telugu, in print. Secretary of the Sahithi Jampana Kumara Varma promised immediate follow-up action while proposing a vote of thanks.
