Impressive performance

P.R. NAIR

Jayakala Sanalkumar enthralled listeners with her mellifluous voice.

MELODIOUS RECITAL: Jayakala Sanalkumar.

Jayakala Sanalkumar's concert organised under the aegis of the Edapally Sangeetha Sadas was a treat to listeners. Hailing from Parumala in Pathanamthitta district, she has been performing for the last 20 years. Endowed with a melodious voice, Jayakala has her own style and approach to the kutcheri.

Jayakala began her concert with a varnam in raga Andolika. She then sung a kriti (`Vinayaka' - Adi talam) in raga Mohanam. She delineated Shanmughapriya to sing the Dikshitar kriti `Sadasraye' in Rupaka talam. A crisp piece in raga Natta, Puruandaradasa's `Jaya jaya janaki kantha' followed.

There was a brief alapana of a rare raga Sivasakthi for the GNB piece `Srichakra Raja Nilaye,' which showed that she embraces the GNB style of neo-classicism well. Jayakala chose Bhairavi as the main raga of the evening. The raga alapana was so sweet that her mellifluous voice touched the lower, middle and upper octaves effortlessly, strictly adhering to the purity of sruthi. She also sang `Sivakama Sundari' in Misrachappu. Her niraval and swaraprasthara were marvellous.

Kumari Rupa, neatly accompanied her on the violin. Edapally Sunil provided excellent percussion support on the mridangam, and Paravur Gopakumar on the mugharsanghu . Jayakala sung a Thumri, a Meera bhajan in Miyank Malhar and a Purandaradasar Devarnama followed. She signed off with a Thillana, a composition by Maharajapuram Santhanam in raga Revathi leaving the connoisseurs craving for more.
