Feast of music

The residents of Thanjavur are being treated to concerts by veteran musicians.

The annual music festival organised by Sri Tyagabrahma Sabha, Thanjavur, is on in full swing at Sri Besant Lodge, the century-old heritage building. The festival started on June 17 with the nagaswaram recital by Sheik Mahaboob Subhani and his wife Kaleeshahi Mahaboob. T. N. Ramachandran, Tamil scholar, speaking at the inauguration of the festival said that the programme by Subhani and his wife was a symbol of national integration.

The Subhani couple, before coming to the festival, played for the mentally challenged children at Sudar School fulfilling the wish of the President, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. The president made the request when the couple visited Rashtrapathi Bhavan in March this year.

Enjoyable line-up

A vocal concert by S. Sankar with V. V. Ravi on the violin, Bhaktavatsalam on the mridangam and V. Suresh on the ghatam was featured on June 18.

Veena recital by Jayanthi Kumaresh, Hindustani vocal by Dattatreya Lakshmandas Velankar, Jugalbandhi, by B.V. Suresh on the flute, Sivaramakrishna on the Sitar, Ramakrishnan on the mridangam and Chandrajit on the tabla were the other programmes.

The sabha had organised tirumurai music by Dharumapuram Gnanaprakasam and Divya Prabandha Isai by Prema Rangarajan on June 22. S. Ganesan played the Jalatarangam yesterday.

Programmes to follow are music discourse by Visakha Hari (June 24), violin duet by V. V. Subramanian and V. V. S. Murari and Kuchipudi by Priya Jairam (June 26). Veteran musician Bala Murali Krishna delivers the valedictory address on Sunday.
