Efforts are on to make a golden chariot for Goddess Tiruparasundari, consort of Sri Marundeeswara, presiding deity of Sri Marundeeswarar temple, Chennai, said to have been built in the 7th century A.D. during the Chola period. Though the inscriptions refer to the main deity as Udaya Mahadevar, the healing qualities of the Lord are revealed by references like Marunthandan and Marundhu denoting medicine.

The Lord of medicines

Legend has it that Agastya entered the portals of the temple and worshipped the Lord fervently. The sage wanted to have a thorough knowledge of the various types of ailments that afflict human beings and the remedies for such diseases. Lord Siva initiated Agastya into the mysteries of the herbal world and hence the deity came to be known as Marundeeswara or Oushadeeswara (The Lord of medicines).

Marundeeswara, the presiding deity manifests Himself in the form of a Swayambu linga who is about 1-1/2 ft. tall. He is believed to possess the scar inflicted by the hooves of Kamadhenu, the divine cow, when she tried to make good her escape from the clutches of the soldiers.

The shrine of Goddess Tripurasundari or Chockanayaki presents the look of a separate temple. The goddess holds Angusa and Pasa in her arms. Festival

The Brahmotsavam is conducted in the Tamil month of Panguni (March-April). A small nandavanam has been created near the Sthalavriksha. Two Kalyana Mantapams named after Tyagaraja and Thiripurasundari Amman have been constructed in the vacant land near the western entrance.

The temple is administered by an Executive Officer appointed by the Hindu Religious Endowments Department, assisted by a Board of Trustees.

The Kumbabhishekam of the temple was performed last year and work has started on the olden chariot for Goddess Tripurasundari.

Those who wish to contribute send in their contributions directly or by post / courier to The Executive Officer, Arulmigu Marundeeswarar Thirukkoil, Tiruvanmiyur, Chennai-600041. (Ph: 24410477.)
