Temple renovation
Thanks to the efforts of the natives of the village, yet another ancient heritage is sought to be preserved and restored in Kurichi, 12 kilometres from Mannargudi, famous for its shrine of Lord Krishna, in the form of Rajagopala. This non-descript town, with a population of barely 1000, is now a hub of activity, as the natives of this village most of whom have never even visited the place earlier have embarked on an ambitious mission to renovate the ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Mahalakshmi. The deities here are also known by the names of Abheeshta Varadaraja, meaning literally the bestower of heart-felt desires, and Perundevi Thayar. Braving the elements, besides snakes, bees and bats and falling stones from a ceiling as high as 40 feet, the devotees have arranged for planks to be placed above the 600-year-old stone idols. The timely action has saved the precious antiques, which otherwise could have been lost forever. The idols have since been installed in the neighbouring temple of Swami Desikan. And the repair work at the temple is now in progress and contributions are invited for the same.
It is believed that offering prayers at the Kurichi temple will rid one of `Pithru Dosham.' Kurichi has been famous for a rich cultural heritage when the ancient Tamil songs of the Azhwars and Vedic literature flourished here. The renovation work has been taken up by the Sri Kainkarya Trust (25, Brahmin Street, Saidapet, Chennai Ph: 98410-15398).
