Indian wins Berlin award

The 28-year-old artist had made India proud by winning several international events.



PEACE PRIZE A rare honour for Sudarsan Pattnaik.

The internationally acclaimed sand artist, Sudarsan Pattnaik, from Orissa has bagged the first prize at the popular Berlin "Sand Sculpture Competition," held recently. . .

Ten countries - US, Russia, Italy, Germany, Holland, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Morocco Indonesia and India took part in the competition.

An Indonesian artist won the second prize. While the sand sculpture competition was held from June 9 to 17 the related festival that is held near the German Parliamssent at "Lehrter Bahnhof" will continue till July 31. Pattnaik is the first Indian sand artist to win the award. He received the award for sculpting a 20- feet high sand sculpture of the Mahatma Gandhi and the three popular Gandhian monkeys on the theme "World Peace" that involved eight days of work The Competition's art director, Martin Tulinius, while announcing the awards described Pattnaik as a "very skilled artist with an original and beautiful artistic expressions."

The impact of his sculptures were always amazing and this year all elements were represented in his sculpture, he explained.

" I know no sand artist who deserves this prize more than Sudarsan Pattnaik. His devotion and contribution to the sand has made a big impact on the world politically as well as aesthetically," he remarked adding that such unique talent was rarely found among artists.

More competitions

Pattnaik has also been selected for two more sand sculpture competitions. Next week he would be participating in a competition in Copenhagen from June 22 to 27. From June 28, Pattnaik will participate in the First International Sand Sculpture Festival being held in Vienna, Austria.s

Twenty-eight year-old Pattnaik has so far participated in 25 international sand sculpture competitions and festivals around the world and won many prizes. Sudarsan had done India proud by winning the public prize in the sandsation - international sand sculpture championship at Zitty Park in Berlin, German in 2004. At that time he sculpted a 25ft. high sand sculpture of Hanuman - son of the wind god that had come in for much appreciation.

Sudarshan who has been creating sand sculpture for the last 14 years at the beach town of Puri provides training to youngsters at his Open Air Golden Sand Art Institute in Puri.
