Yet another CBI tale

VIJAY GEORGE

Another thriller unfolds on the sets of `Nerariyan CBI,' the fourth film starring Mammootty as Sethuramaiyar.

AT WORK: The star cast of `Nerariyan CBI' during the film's shoot.

Sethuramaiyar, the soft-spoken CBI officer who had won many hearts with his modest behaviour and brilliance, is back in action. Director K. Madhu is coming with `Nerariyan CBI,' the shooting of which is currently under way at various locations in Kochi.

"We had planned a story revolving around a plot and its investigation. But in between our discussions, the story began moving ahead once Sethuramaiyar came in. And we decided to bring him back," says Madhu. He is busy canning the scenes in a plush tyre showroom near the bypass at Palarivattom.

One of the best characters

Sethuramaiyar is easily one of the best characters that Mammotty has enacted in his career. "With him around, there is no need for any introduction. The viewers expect him to prove the cases and they are waiting for things to happen soon," says Mammootty about his character. His looks, mannerisms, dressing and even the background score, perhaps the hottest ring tone around, which announce his team's entry on the screen, have been welcomed by the audience.

In `Nerariyan CBI,' the story is about the investigation into the mysterious death of a girl who had come to spend her holidays with two of her friends. "Many people feel that supernatural powers were behind the crime. The issue gets murkier and the CBI team makes its entry," explains Mammootty. Vikram and Chacko are the other members of the three-member CBI team.

Jagathy Sreekumar, who plays Vikram, explains that, "my character often sports a poker face even while passing some snide comments, which usually has the audience in splits. Vikram uses some interesting techniques to get some clues about the investigation, which includes disguising himself."

Vikram's ability to evoke laughter is, according to the director, a fine example of comedy that does not rely on slapstick. Says Mukesh, who plays Chacko in the movie, "Chacko was in the Kerala Police before becoming a part of the CBI team. Recently, when I had gone to the Gulf for a show, a few people in the audience talked at length about Chacko. They seemed to have kept track of him," says Mukesh.

As the three stars stop in front of the shop and get down from their car, the excitement among the onlookers is palpable.

Mix of action and romance

Cinematographer Saloo George, who feels lucky that he has got "the right mix of action, romantic and comedy films to shoot," has opted for a `crane-shot.' The scene features the three of them grilling Cochin Haneefa to get a lead regarding the case.

"Some of the viewers who had enjoyed `Oru CBI Diarykkurippu,' when it was released 18 years ago and later `Jagratha,' saw `Sethuramaiyar CBI', a year before, along with their kids. Over the years, I have put on weight and the script writer S.N. Swami's head has more grey than black now, but we are still enthusiastic about the characters. And for all of us it is like getting 18 years younger. However I don't regard `Nerariyan CBI' as the fourth part of the series. This is the coming together of the team for the fourth time," clarifies Madhu.
