Superb presentation

T.K. SADASIVAN

`Santhanagopalam,' which was staged by veterans, enchanted the audience.

Kalamandalam Vasu Pishorody excelled in his masterpiece role of the `Brahmin.'

CAPTIVATING: A scene from the play 'Santhanagopalam'.

It was a rare blend of excellent performances by versatile Kathakali actors and musicians. `Santhanagopalam,' a Kathakali performance, which was jointly organised by BEAME and Ernakulam Kathakali Club enthralled Kathakali enthusiasts who gathered at Kerala Fine Arts Society Hall, Ernakulam.

Adapted from the epics

`Santhanagopalam,' penned by Mandavapally Ittiraricha Menon, is adapted from the Bagavatham, and it is a favourite of Kathalkali fans for its dramatic sequences and enchanting songs. The highlight of the performance was that both the actors and the musicians were at their best, which made the show exceptionally good.

Kalamandalam Vasu Pishorody excelled in his masterpiece role of the `Brahmin.' With his expressive eyes and articulate gestures, he could easily portray the sorrow of the father who had lost all his children. But the best performance was of Kalamandalam Balasubramanian as `Arjuna.' He was at his best during `Elakiyattom' and the portrayal of Arjuna's predicament.

Kottakkal Kesavan in the role of `Krishna,' C. R. Ratheesan as `Brahminapathni' and C.R. Ranjith as an old woman were also impressive. Vocal support was provided by Kalanilayam Unnikrishnan and Kalamandalam Babu Namboodiri. Kalamandalam Unnikrishnan on the chenda and Nelluvay Narayanan on the madhalam ably supported them.
