Remembering Omkar Nath Thakur
In memory of Pandit Omkar Nath Thakur, Swar Rang presented music recitals this past week. One was a violin recital by his disciple, N. Rajam, known for her mastery over the gayaki ang of instrumental technique. The other was a Dhrupad recital by Ustad F. Wasifuddin Dagar, scion of the illustrious Dagar bani of Hindustani music.
Sattriya in the Capital
Sattriya, the dance form that developed in the monasteries of Assam, has over the years developed an identity as a performing art for the proscenium stage. Increasingly, artistes from Assam as well as other regions of India are taking to this art as a means of expression outside the religious precincts. Recently India Habitat Centre played host to one such recital by Anita Sharma and Provakar Goswami, disciples of Nrityacharya Jatin Goswami.
Plays Galore
The Habitat also mounted a number of plays this past week. Abhiyan presented Vijay Tendulkar's "Sakharam Binder", a play in Hindi directed by Rajinder Nath and Natsamrat a hilarious comedy play "Kambakht Ishq", written by Satya Prakash and directed by Shyam Kumar.
Imago Theatre-in-Education presented its workshop production and Anant also followed suit the next day.
IIC Centre presented "Kumarasambhava of Kalidasa' a solo performance by Parnab Mukhejee.
The production had elements of installation techniques, Purulia Chhau, performance art, shadow puppetry and interplay of modern symbols.
