On the occasion of its golden jubilee year, 2005, Chennai-based Krishna Gana Sabha has selected Bharatanatyam danseuse Rajeswari Sainath for the prestigious Nritya Choodamani award.
The award will be presented in December. The dancer will be performing free for the Sabha this year-end in keeping with its norms.
A visibly jubilant Rajeswari says, "I am privileged to have been chosen for this award, which has bestowed on the likes of Dr. Padma Subhramanyam, Yamini Krishnamurthy, Leela Samson and Anitha Ratnam. I am the first Bharatanatyam dancer from Andhra Pradesh to get it. Also, it is being given to me on the Sabha's golden jubilee celebrations. That makes it doubly special for me. I consider it a divine blessing. Once more it has been proved that hard work pays off."
The award sets off a series of recitals for Rajeswari this season at Chennai in all the city's reputed Sabhas. As usual, she will come out with a new production every year.
Her recent Australian tour has brought in its share of accolades. The Academy for Indian classical music, where she participated in the Thyagaraja fest and the Mummurthi festival, has extended an invite to her to perform next year too.
